Omani Campaigns against Bahrain, 1799–1842

Abstract

This study aims to shed light on the Omani campaigns against Bahrain during the period 1799–1842, in the context of Oman’s considerable maritime power in the Arabian Gulf region.

Bahrain also occupied a distinctive and strategically important geographical position at the center of the Arabian Gulf, enabling it to exercise influence over the region’s navigation and trade routes. In addition, Bahrain was an important center of pearl production in the Arabian Gulf. These advantages prompted various powers to compete for control of the islands and seek their annexation.

Among these powers was the Omani government, which made repeated attempts to gain control of Bahrain and incorporate it into its territories. Oman dispatched several military campaigns to Bahrain, some of which initially succeeded. Ultimately, however, the Omani forces were compelled to withdraw, and all attempts to establish lasting control over Bahrain ended in failure.
