Abstract

The Abbasid caliphs devoted considerable attention to the scientific movement and to scholars, particularly after Baghdad was established as the capital of the Arab-Islamic state in 145 AH/762 CE. This contributed significantly to the flourishing of the medical sciences and to the emergence of a number of physicians who played an important role in providing medical services to both the ruling elite and members of society.

The activities of some of these physicians extended beyond medical practice. They also contributed to other areas of intellectual and scientific activity, most notably the translation of the Greek medical heritage and the authorship of medical works based on their own practical experience and professional expertise.
