The Development of the Concept of Character in Modern World Theatre: Mother Courage as a Model

Abstract

This research aims to study dramatic character, which is regarded as one of the most important elements of dramatic construction, as it conveys the idea, embodies conflict, and influences the recipient. Dramatic character is the heart of the dramatic work; through it, ideas are presented, conflicts are revealed, and events interact with the spectator.

With the development of world theatre, the concepts of character changed from the fixed classical model to the realistic model that reflects the environment, and then to the dialectical construction of character in modern theatre, particularly in Brecht’s epic theatre. Mother Courage and Her Children presents a vivid model of how dramatic character can be reconsidered, so that it becomes a tool for critical thinking and social analysis rather than merely a character intended to evoke emotional sympathy.

This study seeks to trace the development of the concept of dramatic character through an analysis of the character of Mother Courage within Brecht’s intellectual and artistic context. The research consists of four chapters. The first chapter includes the methodological framework of the study, while the second chapter constitutes the theoretical framework and is divided into two sections: the first traces the development of the concept of character in world theatre, and the second examines the principles of Brecht’s epic theatre.
