Al-Baqi Cemetery in the Islamic Eras A Historical Study

Abstract

Al-Baqi Cemetery is considered one of the most prominent historical landmarks in Medina. Its establishment dates back to the first year after the Hijrah, during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Al-Baqi became the main burial ground for the people of Medina, including the Companions and the Followers. Among the most notable figures buried there are several of the Mothers of the Believers and members of the Prophet’s Household.

Throughout the Islamic eras, the cemetery witnessed architectural developments, as domes and mausoleums were erected over it during different periods, particularly in the Abbasid and Ottoman eras, as an expression of its religious status. It was also a destination for visitors and pilgrims across the centuries. In the modern era, the structures built over it were removed, restoring the cemetery to its simple character. Al-Baqi thus remains a living witness to Islamic history and to the spiritual status of Medina across the ages.
