Between 1980 and 1990, Poland experienced significant political transformations, especially with the establishment of the Solidarity government in 1989. The United States supported the democratic movement in Poland and condemned human rights violations, while the Soviet Union monitored the situation and worked to threaten the Polish government, fearing a deviation from socialism. These developments led the United States to impose economic sanctions on Poland after the Polish government declared martial law and restricted freedoms with direct support from Warsaw Pact countries, primarily the Soviet Union.
